Lessons from London North-Centre

LNC was a great Green event and I am so glad that I was fortunate enough to be a part of it. After traveling from Kingston with a few fellow Queen’s Greens and a reporter from Queen’s University, we were able to campaign both on and off campus—we were able to learn a lot about campaigning. Here are a couple thoughts that came out of that campaign…

1. Elizabeth May Can Win
We already knew it, but all of Canada needs to know it. She is our primary spokesperson and her sincere passion for Green politics is an example for all of us. We need to be in Parliament and hold the old parties accountable to our standard—policies characterized by compassion and foresight. We can do this by following May’s example of tireless dedication to Green politics and her commitment to not engage in negative campaigning.

2. Young Greens in Elections
The Young Greens can be an important element in the next election. We are the best candidates for involvement in the GPC and we are the best people to communicate with other students. A well-organized and effective YGC Council will go a long way to helping Green students get the message out to students all across Canada.

3. Campus Campaigning Methods
There were some saying that we were too agressive. Maybe, maybe not. The Young Greens need to be bold and enthusiastic, but always polite. We need to be unashamed of approaching students with our message, but be sensitive enough to know when to back off a little. We need to be aggressive, but patient—some people must hear the Green message a few times before it will take root. If we do this, our message will certainly be heard.

Thanks to all the students who came together in London and let’s keep preparing for a successful spring election. Let's build an efficient and inclusive Council that will help young Canadians all across the country find as much joy as we do in working for a better Canada!
